Our class is currently working on decorating our door for the "Books for Kids" book drive. Each student decorated a piece of paper to look like the cover of their favorite book. I also took a picture of each student reading that will be hung with the covers. I will take more pictures of the door and post them later, but I have included a slide show of the reading pictures below the article from the West Words about the drive.
“Books for Kids” Collection Begins
Central and West Elementary Schools and Wamego Public Library Children's Program announce the kick-off of a new literacy program for our community children ages 0-12. “Books for Kids” will begin with a drive to collect gently used or new children's books that will run from January 10 until March 1, 2011. These may include board books, picture books, chapter books, and other books for those 0-12 years old.
This program will help to increase reading skills such as word recognition, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension. This will be done by putting extra books and more opportunities to read in the hands of our local children and students. Drop-off sites for the book collection are Central Elementary, West Elementary, and Wamego Public Library Children's Room. Go through your books and find some for our kids—everyone needs some good books to read!
